Description

This enduring tale has been claimed to be a satire on language, a political allegory, a parody of Victorian children's literature, or even a reflection of contemporary ecclesiastical history. It was perhaps, as the author might have said, no more than a dream, a fairy tale about the trials and tribulations of growing up or down, or all turned round-as seen through the expert eyes of a child.

"The why of this book cannot, and need not, be put into words. Those for whom a child's mind is a sealed book, and see no divinity in a child's smile, would read such words in vain; while for anyone who has ever loved one true child, no words are needed." Ellen Terry

Reviews

AudioFile Magazine...
The booming announcer's voice at the beginning of this 1994 radio production sets the tone, letting listeners know that it evokes the style of Old-Time Radio. That theme carries over into the casting of Jeanette Nolan, who performed in the first coast-to-coast broadcast in 1932. The production stays true to its goal, setting the scene skillfully with simple sound effects. Actress Samantha Eggar is charming as young Alice, and Roddy McDowell brings warmth to the narration. An impressive roster of talent in small roles adds deft comic timing to the classic tale and many laughs from the audience at the original taping. Stylish production and star power make this version of the oft-told tale a standout. J.A.S. (c) AudioFile 2004, Portland, Maine
